Original Release: EA, 1997, Genesis / SNES / PlayStation / Windows / Saturn
The series firmly moved on to the 64-bit era and the PC with this year’s installment, but the 16-bit warhorses got a slightly tweaked version of the ’97 edition.

EA apparently saw enough money in doing a 16-bit release of this edition to make it worth publishing, but not enough to try very hard. This is literally the exact same game as Madden 97, just with the rosters updated and records for longest plays and such added. They didn’t even bother to change the music or sound effects! This port was farmed out to THQ and they apparently decided to play it very conservative and just not change much of anything at all.
If it comes down to a choice between this or Madden 97, I guess 98 is the one to go with simply for the improved record keeping and stat tracking, but otherwise it really doesn’t matter and it gets a Meh rating for just being a lame cash-grab move.
