Original Release: IGT (2000)
Other Releases: IGT (updated for online casinos, 2016)
An aesthetically appealing slot, at least in its online update … the original release may be harder to find but offers smaller minimum bets
The Munsters (IGT, 2016)
Review by: C. M0use
They’re sticky and they’re ooky, mysterious and kooky … wait, do I have the right guys?
Anyway. IGT’s Munsters is based on the vintage show, featuring old TV clips and having some of the best music you’ll find in a slot (with the show’s cool surf rock theme constantly playing over the action). In terms of betting, it seems to require high minimums but also offers lots of wins that net positive for you. The older live casino version seems to offer multiple payline choices while the newer online versions cover all lines automatically with your bet.
Larger bet amounts above the minimum improve the main bonus feature, a fairly simple wheel spin that gets better prizes added to it the more you wager. Sometimes this sends you into a mini-game that plays out automatically, like Grandpa Racing or the Leadfoot Bonus; these play out in stages and you can choose to quit after each, as race losses can potentially eat into your winnings.
You can also land free spins, but this is probably the most disappointing aspect of the game. At the smaller bet amounts, you only get five; it’s possible to re-trigger, but this only resets them to five total. To get anywhere with this you seem to need an extremely improbable run of stacking up tons of wilds. For the most part I found you can only expect 1x to 2x your wager from free spins, so you can’t count on it as the “catch-up period” you get from other slots. I guess it’s probably a nudge to increase your bet amount to earn more free spins, but that’s a BIG jump in cost from the minimum and really changes the calculation on volatility. Some versions (possibly just the older ones) seem to have Munster Match tile matching bonus game instead, which I didn’t try.
When this was first released, over 20 years ago, it was a penny slot in live casinos … the more updated online version offers vintage video clips from the show as well as nice music, but it’ll also cost ya more. But if the minimum bet isn’t too much of an ask, it also seems to have at least reasonable volatility with smaller wagers and is one of the more pleasant games to play for an extended period.
